Patients tend to put off dental visits for a variety of reasons, but there are many disorders of the mouth that require clinical care by a dentist or other oral health specialist. Our teeth may be causing or contributing to poor health. In fact, regular routine visits may help prevent a problem from developing or alert us to a problem before it can advance to a more serious condition.
Our teeth may not cause any local pain, but they may cause a lot of health problems in other parts of the body. To keep your teeth and mouth healthy for a lifetime of use, talk with your dentist or hygienist about any special conditions in your mouth and any ways in which your medical/health conditions affect your teeth or oral health. For example, cancer treatments, pregnancy, heart diseases, diabetes, dental appliances (dentures, braces) can all impact your oral health and may necessitate a change in the care of your mouth and/or teeth.
