Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)
Bruxism is a habit of grinding or clenching the teeth. Clenching means you tightly hold your top and bottom teeth together. Grinding occurs when you slide your teeth back and forth over each other. Bruxism can develop at any age. Stress is the most common cause, however, misaligned teeth and sleep disorders may also be factors.
There are several telltale signs for those who suffer from bruxism. If you experience headaches, sore jaw, worn tooth enamel, facial pain, clenching or grinding, Dr. Shaw may be able to help alleviate or take away your discomfort with treatment.
A night guard prevents contact between your upper and lower teeth and protects the enamel from the wear of grinding. A warm washcloth and physical therapy exercises to help relax the jaw muscles may also be prescribed as part of a treatment regimen.
Early treatment is the best defense against the potential damage caused by bruxing.
