Cracked Tooth Syndrome
Teeth may crack when subjected to the stress of chewing hard foods or ice, or by biting on an unexpectedly hard object. Teeth restored with large silver filling are by far the most commonly cracked teeth.
Simple Crack
Most (7 of 10) cracked teeth fall into this group. These are teeth that elicit pain on chewing and are sensitive to cold stimuli. The crack has not reached the nerve of the tooth. These teeth can be restored with a crown/cap that permanently stabilizes the crack.
Complex Crack
Occasionally (3 of 10) the crack in the tooth extends into the nerve (pulp) of the tooth. These teeth usually are painful upon chewing and sensitive to hot and cold stimuli. Teeth of this type may require root canal therapy before the crown is placed.
